What is a three-phase autotransformer work?

A transformer is used to increase/decrease or increase voltages in an electric circuit using the principle of electromagnetic induction. This comes useful when the supply voltage or line voltage available to you does not match the input voltage requirements of the device you want to operate.

What is working principle?
 
The working principle of the autotransformer is that when a coil is connected to an AC power supply (the primary coil), an alternating current flows through the coil. This alternating current generates an alternating magnetic field in the iron core. The alternating main magnetic flux generates its own induced electromotive force in the primary coil, while the other coil (the secondary coil) induces the mutual inductance electromotive force. By changing the relationship between the turns ratio of the primary and secondary coils, the terminal voltages of the primary and secondary coils are changed to realize the voltage conversion.

The autotransformer has only one winding. When it is used as a step-down transformer, part of the wire turns are drawn from the winding as the secondary winding; When used as a step-up transformer, the applied voltage is only applied to a part of the wire turns of the winding. Generally, the part of the winding that belongs to both the primary and secondary windings is called the common winding, and the rest of the autotransformer is called the series winding. Compared with the ordinary transformer, the autotransformer with the same capacity is not only small in size, but also high in efficiency. The larger the transformer capacity, the higher the voltage.
