What is a dry type transformer?
A dry type transformer is an electrical device that is used in AC power distribution systems to safely “step up” or “step down” voltages to meet the incoming power requirements of connected equipment. Dry type transformers achieve this goal without modifying the frequency or amount of electrical power to help ensure connected devices can operate reliably.
Dry type transformers are static devices, meaning they contain no continuously moving mechanical parts. This contributes to their long lifecycle and minimal maintenance requirements. They can range in size from enormous devices that weighs several tons, commonly used in power substations, to very small devices that weigh only a few ounces and are commonly found in compact electrical equipment.
Thanks to their design flexibility and critical role in the electrical system, transformers are used in nearly every power distribution system application including commercial buildings, schools, healthcare & institutions, water/wastewater, industrial, oil & gas and data centers.
Can dry type transformers be used outdoors?
Many people may think that dry type transformers are only suitable for indoor use, in fact, dry type transformers can also be used outdoors. However, the following should be noted:
1. Waterproof: Because the dry type transformer itself is not waterproof, it is necessary to pay attention to the installation of waterproof measures in outdoor use to prevent rain and snow from penetrating into the transformer, which leads to short circuit and other dangers.
2. Moistureproof: Similarly, outdoor use of dry type transformers also need to pay attention to moisture and avoid the impact of fog, dew and other moisture on the transformer.
3. Sun protection: Dry type transformer is easy to age under high temperature and strong light, so it is necessary to take appropriate sunscreen measures to avoid direct sunlight to the transformer.
4. Placement: When selecting the location of the outdoor dry type transformer, it is necessary to take into account the surrounding environment and ventilation to avoid poor environmental conditions which affect the normal operation of the transformer.
How to protect dry type transformers outdoors?
Special protective shell: When dry type transformers are used outdoors, special protective shells need to be configured, such as the IP44 shell which can protect the side from water but does not provide the top cable inlet and outlet.
Platform installation: Dry type transformer in outdoor use is usually installed on the special platform. Such platform is called dry transformer station .
Advantages and disadvantages of dry type transformers used outdoors
Advantages:
1.Wide range of application: Although dry type transformers are mainly used indoors, but it can be used outdoors through special protective measures.
2.High safety: Dry type transformer has the characteristics of flame retardant and explosion-proof. It will not produce arc due to short circuit, and resin will not produce toxic and harmful gases at high temperature .
Disadvantages:
1.Complex maintenance: Dry type transformer in outdoor use needs regular inspection and maintenance to ensure the integrity of the protective shell and the normal operation of the transformer.
2.Reduced performance: Because the transformer is exposed to harsh environments for a long time, its performance may be affected. The transformer requires regular inspection and replacement of parts.
